Where do I learn?

Welcome to current and future students of reflexology.

If you are thinking of learning reflexology in New Zealand, you need to read this.

If you are looking for a qualification in reflexology it probably seems like there is a myriad of courses available, but which one is right for you?

First of all it is worth thinking where you want to position yourself after your course; do you want to treat friends and family or are you hoping to make a living out of reflexology?

If you want to treat friends and family then insurance is not so critical and professional support is not necessarily needed. In this situation any introductory course to suit your budget and your time scale will be OK, but you will not be able to become a professional member of Reflexology New Zealand or other professional organisations in future unless you train further.

It is worth noting there is no protection of title for reflexology in NZ so anyone can call themselves a ‘reflexologist’. The difference comes from the level of training.

You can join RNZ as an affiliate member if you are not going to be charging for treatments and/or you are just working informally with family and friends. Affiliate membership includes those with reflexology certificate trainings that fall below the RNZ diploma minimum standards.

If, however, you want to make a career of being a reflexologist then it is important to make sure your qualification opens the right door for you in the future. There are bridging courses available for certificate-trained reflexologists to upgrade.

For professional membership to RNZ, practitioners must possess insurance and have a current first aid certificate. You must also meet continuing professional development requirements each year.

Warning: total distance learning for manual therapies is not a good idea, as you need to feel what you are learning in person. Blended learning courses offer some distance or eLearning, with some ‘hands on’ classroom modules.

Reflexology New Zealand is a self managing body, which has set the NZ reflexology educational standards. There follows a list of RNZ accredited education providers, and what they offer.
